Keep your ATS. Give the hiring decision its own system.
An ATS keeps applications and hiring stages organised. Screening helps your team decide who deserves an interview and why. Some ATS products include screening; compare how each handles the questions your team needs answered.
Cernor reviews candidates for your role, explores unclear experience through follow-up, and shows the reasons behind each recommendation. Your team decides who advances.

An ATS is the system around the hiring workflow.
Applicant tracking systems collect applications, maintain candidate records, move people through stages and keep the process organised. Many also provide filters, knockout questions, automation and other screening-adjacent features. This is real work that a screening layer does not do.
Screening is the judgment inside the process.
Once obvious gates are resolved, the harder question is not where a candidate sits in the workflow. It is whether their experience actually meets the bar for this role, how strong the evidence is, what remains uncertain and what should happen next.
Screening
Where the candidate is
Advance, and why
Evidence attached · one material question open
A stage tells you where the candidate is. A screening decision tells you why they should move.
The overlap is real. The centre of gravity is different.
Plenty of applicant tracking systems ship screening features, and plenty of screening tools touch workflow. Judge each category by the work it is built to do well.
Your ATS records where a candidate is in the process. Evaluation should show why they belong at the next stage. Some products do both. Our research note The Decision Starts Where the Application Stops explains how to assess the reasoning behind a recommendation.

- Coordinate recruiting workflow
- Apply simple gates and filters
- Keep the process history
Reach and explain the screening recommendation.
- Define the evaluation Standard
- Evaluate candidates against it
- Compare the cohort
- Show who leads and why
- Preserve evidence and uncertainty
- Update the recommendation when evidence changes
Screening itself splits into several different jobs. Compare the kinds of candidate screening tool.
The overlap is useful. The unresolved decision still needs an owner.
If the early decision is mostly explicit gates, such as a mandatory credential, location or another genuine non-negotiable, your ATS may already provide everything the team needs to narrow the pool.
Modern ATS products also evaluate criteria, explain results and gather answers. The comparisons below describe each vendor’s published capabilities. Test those capabilities against the actual questions in your hiring process.
Choose Cernor when several candidates look plausible and your decision turns on what they personally owned, delivered or can substantiate. It reviews the whole pool, investigates those questions and gives you a recommendation with the reasons attached.

The screening Standard should exist before candidate results start influencing it.
Cernor turns your role into agreed requirements, called the Standard. Your team approves them before evaluation, so each candidate is assessed against the same expectations.
The shortlist follows the Standard. It does not quietly rewrite it.
Cernor doesn’t just attach evidence to candidate records. It reaches a screening recommendation.
The same Standard is applied across the cohort, so the team can see who leads, why, what is well supported and what could still change the order.
Cernor recommends who deserves interview time. The final hiring call stays yours.
An unresolved point should become the next evidence-gathering step, not a generic questionnaire.
When something material remains Open, Cernor builds a candidate-specific Follow-Up path from that evidence gap. What it asks next can depend on what the candidate just answered, testing ownership, scope, proof or consistency before interview.
Cernor evaluates what comes back. The current screening recommendation can strengthen, weaken or stay unresolved, and Cernor shows what caused the movement.

Keep your ATS as the system of record.
Cernor is built around the hiring decision itself rather than workflow ownership. It supports ATS-connected workflows while your existing system continues to manage applications, candidate records and stages.
Connecting an ATS is optional for the Trial. Start directly with a job description and resumes, or connect Cernor into your ATS workflow.
Five questions to ask before adding candidate screening software.
- 01
Is our problem workflow, or judgment?
- 02
Can our current system show why one plausible candidate leads another?
- 03
Can it represent missing or contradictory evidence without hiding it inside one number?
- 04
What happens when something important is still unresolved?
- 05
When new evidence arrives, can we see whether the recommendation changed, and why?
Your ATS remains the system of record. Cernor becomes the system for the decision itself.
Start instantly with a job description and resumes. Full evaluation detail, targeted Follow-Up and unlimited team members, from $199 per live role with no monthly subscription.
Know who deserves interview time. Know why.
Common questions.
What is the difference between an ATS and candidate screening software?
An ATS primarily manages the hiring workflow: applications, candidate records and stages. Candidate screening software focuses on evaluating applicants before interview and deciding who should move forward and why.
Does an ATS screen candidates?
Many applicant tracking systems include screening features such as knockout questions, filters, ranking or automation. Whether that is enough depends on the hiring problem. Explicit gates fit well inside an ATS; deeper evidence-driven comparison usually does not.
Do I need candidate screening software if I already have an ATS?
An ATS handles workflow and explicit gates well, and where the decision is genuinely a yes-or-no gate that is enough. Dedicated screening earns its place when several plausible candidates must be compared against one bar on uneven evidence, a question stage tracking alone cannot answer.
Does Cernor replace an ATS?
No. Cernor focuses on the screening decision: the Standard, the candidate evidence, the recommendation, what is still unresolved and what should happen next. Your ATS keeps the applications, the records and the stages.
Can an ATS and Cernor be used together?
Yes. Cernor supports ATS-connected workflows while your ATS remains the system of record. Connecting one is optional for the Trial, so you can also start directly with a job description and resumes. The ATS continues to manage applications and hiring stages while Cernor handles the screening decision before interview.
What does Cernor add beyond ATS screening?
Cernor locks one Standard, evaluates the cohort against it, separates Merit from Trust, keeps every criterion Supported, Partial, Open or Contradicted, builds adaptive Follow-Up from unresolved evidence, and updates the recommendation when new evidence comes back.
Keep the workflow. Deepen the decision.
Use one live role. Cernor applies the Standard, evaluates the cohort, follows up where evidence is still open and shows who leads and why.
