Ashby tells you what the application supports. Cernor investigates what matters next.
Choose Cernor when an undecided requirement could hide your next hire. It reviews the whole applicant pool, asks the candidate about important gaps and shows what the answers change. Your agreed role requirements, called the Standard, keep that evaluation consistent.

Cernor vs Ashby AI Application Review Updated September 2026 First-party sources
Turn an open finding into the next piece of evidence.
Ashby · 400 applications
Every resume analysed against your criteria. Each criterion returns meets, does not meet or unknown, with reasoning and citations. A criteria-met percentage orders the pile. Your reviewer opens the strongest and decides.
Cernor · the same 400
Cernor reads the cohort against approved criteria. Where a material claim remains open, targeted Follow-Up gathers more evidence. The team sees which findings changed, which stayed unresolved and why the recommendation moved or held.
Not another question. A path built around the claim that decides it.
A resume says “led the transformation programme”. The words leave ownership unclear. This illustrative path shows how Cernor investigates the work behind them.
The answer should describe the work accurately. Cernor evaluates it against the role, including its scope and consistency with the record. A smaller role may still meet the requirement; a detailed answer may still leave the claim unresolved.
The same ten questions, asked of both.
Where a row reads “not described”, that is a statement about Ashby’s current public Application Review documentation and nothing more.
| Question | Cernor | Ashby |
|---|---|---|
| Does every applicant get read? | Yes: the whole cohort against one agreed set of role requirements | Yes: the AI analyses every resume against the configured criteria |
| Where do the criteria come from? | The hiring team authors and locks them before the first candidate is read | Documented by the user, or auto-generated from the job description |
| What happens to a polished claim the career does not support? | Fit, Evidence and Trust are judged separately, so an impressive record carrying an unsupported claim shows as exactly that | The determination is made against the criteria, with reasoning and citations from the submitted record |
| What happens when the resume leaves an important question unanswered? | The criterion is recorded as Open and becomes the target of Follow-Up | The AI can return “unknown” on that criterion, with reasoning |
| Who gets asked a follow-up question? | Only the candidates whose own record left something decision-critical unresolved | Not described: Application Review evaluates the submitted record |
| Where does the next question come from? | That candidate’s specific unresolved claim, with the following question depending on the answer before it | Not described in the current Application Review material |
| Can the candidate’s answer move them up the shortlist? | Yes: returned evidence is judged against the same Standard and the recommendation moves or holds on it | Not described in the current Application Review material |
| What happens if the hiring manager changes the requirement mid-search? | The Standard versions; only the affected candidates reopen, and you see who moved and who held | Criteria can be edited and applications reviewed against them |
| Does it work with our ATS? | Yes: the ATS stays the system of record; connecting one is optional to start | Ashby is the ATS |
| What does the hiring manager receive? | A Decision Packet: who to interview, what the evidence established, what is still open, and what moved | Per-criterion determinations with reasoning and citations, and an AI criteria-met percentage |
Fast, cited, and deliberately unwilling to guess.
Ashby places AI-assisted review inside its ATS. Teams define criteria and inspect determinations with supporting reasoning and citations. Its documented unknown state makes gaps visible to reviewers. This comparison covers Application Review; other interview products are separate.
Everything that happens after the record has been read.
Undecided is the work list
An open criterion is a finding your team can act on. Cernor uses material gaps to shape Follow-Up while keeping Fit, Evidence, Trust and the next action distinct.
“Led” is a ladder, not a word
The question is not whether the candidate led something. It is which rung: overall owner, workstream owner, implementation lead, functional representative, or execution support. Cernor investigates the scope, and the second question exists only because of how the first was answered.
Polish is not depth
Whether the career supports the capability and whether the claims about it hold together are two judgments, not one. An application written by someone who is good at writing applications does not clear a bar it has not met.
An honest downgrade is a good outcome
If the answer establishes a smaller scope than the resume implied, that is recorded accurately and the candidate is judged on what is now known. Follow-Up is not a rescue mechanism; it is how new evidence changes the assessment.
Hand over something usable
The hiring manager gets who to interview, what the evidence established, what is still open and what changed: with the criteria it was all decided against kept alongside it.

Applications, stages, scheduling, offers, reporting: the system of record, unchanged.
Cernor
The deep read on the candidates already in it: what the evidence supports, what is unresolved, what to ask, and what the answer changes.
The join
Cernor supports ATS-connected workflows. Start with a job description and resumes; connecting an ATS is optional.
What buyers actually ask.
Ashby already has an unknown state. What does Cernor add?
The investigation and the decision that follow. Cernor builds targeted questions around material open findings, assesses the returned evidence and shows why the recommendation changes or holds. An unanswered question becomes work the system carries forward.
Is Cernor replacing Ashby?
Keep Ashby as your ATS. Cernor supports ATS-connected workflows and adds a deep candidate assessment, targeted Follow-Up and a decision record your team can inspect. Start with a role and resumes before connecting an ATS.
We already review applications quickly. Why add Cernor?
The value is what happens to a promising candidate whose experience remains unclear. Cernor investigates the consequential gap and connects the answer to the recommendation. Your team spends the interview on what still deserves a human conversation.
Does Cernor ask every candidate questions?
Follow-Up is for material gaps in the individual record. Candidates whose evidence leaves no decision-critical question open do not need it. Answers can strengthen, weaken or leave the finding unresolved.
