Cernor vs TestGorilla Updated September 2026 First-party sources

01 · The shared problem

A polished application still has to earn its claims.

A test result, a resume and a polished claim each tell you something different. Cernor reads the candidate’s experience against your role criteria and makes those distinctions explicit. Your team sees what is supported, what remains uncertain and which next step the evidence warrants.

02 · Where the systems diverge

One criterion, two ways of writing down the answer.

Consider ownership of a production system at scale. A useful evaluation should show the evidence behind the finding and what could change it.

Two representations of one criterion. TestGorilla's published resume scoring records a score from zero to five for each criterion, with an explanation and overall raw and percentile scores. Cernor records one of four named states: Supported, meaning the record establishes it; Partial, meaning the record speaks to it and not enough; Open, meaning the record does not address it; and Contradicted, meaning the record conflicts with the claim. Cernor's Open state is what candidate-specific Follow-Up is built from.
03 · What an assessment does that no record can

A test answers a question a resume is not able to.

A work sample or skills test reveals performance under the conditions tested. TestGorilla supplies that evidence. Cernor evaluates the broader career record and identifies where a direct assessment could answer an important open question.

Cernor keeps the decision connected before and after new evidence arrives. It identifies what is already supported, prepares targeted Follow-Up, and reads the reply or other evidence against the same criteria. The recommendation can strengthen, weaken or stay unresolved, with the reason visible.

05 · What Cernor records, and why it is four states

Go from a promising result to a reasoned decision.

Cernor keeps Fit, Evidence, Trust and action distinct. A high Fit signal does not erase an open criterion or a claim that still needs verification.

Standard

Your team agrees what matters for the role and approves the criteria before evaluation. Cernor holds every candidate to that bar, with the importance and evidence requirements made explicit.

Four states

A criterion resolves to Supported, Partial, Open or Contradicted. Open is the one that does the work: it is how Cernor represents a criterion the record has not established, kept distinct from one the record addresses weakly. Those two findings lead to different actions, so they are stored as different things.

Evidence

A strong test result and a strong ownership claim are different evidence. Cernor ties each finding to its source, so your team can inspect what was demonstrated, what was described and what still needs checking.

Fit, Evidence and Trust

Fit describes apparent strength for the role. Evidence shows what supports it; Trust identifies claims that need verification. The recommended action stays distinct, so an impressive career can still warrant a careful question.

Follow-Up

Cernor prepares questions around this candidate’s unresolved evidence or verification need. The next question can depend on the last answer. Each reply is evaluated for what it establishes and what remains open.

Movement

New evidence is read against the same criteria. The recommendation can strengthen, weaken or hold, and your team can see which evidence changed which finding.

History

The Decision Packet keeps the role criteria, evidence, open questions and recommendation history together. Your team can return to the decision and see why it was made.

06 · Running both

Ask for the evidence the decision actually needs.

Cernor

Identifies which requirements the record supports and which open question calls for a test, further context or verification.

TestGorilla

Tests performance under defined conditions and returns results for the team to review.

The join

An assessment result is evidence. Read against the same criteria, it can support, challenge or leave a finding open. The recommendation changes only as the evidence warrants.

07 · Questions

What buyers actually ask.

Does Cernor replace skills testing?

No. Tests produce evidence of performance under the conditions tested. Cernor gives your team the broader career assessment, identifies what still matters to the role, and evaluates new evidence against those same criteria. Use it to know what to investigate and why the result matters.

TestGorilla scores resumes too. What is different?

TestGorilla returns a 0–5 score per criterion with an explanation. Cernor connects criterion-level evidence states to targeted Follow-Up and recommendation history. Choose Cernor when you need to investigate an important unknown and see how the answer changes the next step.

Can we run both?

Yes. Cernor identifies supported experience and important open questions. A TestGorilla assessment can add relevant performance evidence. Read against the role criteria, that evidence can change the finding and the recommendation, with the reason retained.

Does Cernor score candidates 1–10?

Cernor includes a Fit signal alongside Evidence, Trust and the recommended action. They remain distinct. A strong Fit result can coexist with an open requirement, and targeted Follow-Up can establish what that result alone cannot tell your team.

Does Cernor connect to our ATS?

Yes. Cernor supports ATS-connected workflows while your ATS remains the system of record, and connecting one is optional to start. You can begin directly with a job description and resumes.
